Never Shall the Shadow Fall
Poem No. 809
Never shall the the shadow fall in final form and deadly pall never shall I answer to the call of the Rot that festers all about. I will rage against the dying of the light with broken weapons, still I fight it matters not how oft the Blight rises and ruins— I will build again. Bloodied and traitorous, I may be but I will turn again from the sea when Damnation’s tides rise around me I may be drowned, but never die, for I have fixed my eye on the Light that cannot die.
I messed up, on the day I wrote this poem. I did something I shouldn’t have. When the time came to write my daily bit of rhyme, I didn’t feel like doing it— I felt defeated, as if I ought to go to bed in silence, and put no words on the page.
But then I realized, doing that would be another victory for my Enemy. I could not allow that. So I whipped out my Notes app and typed this poem up before pulling up the covers.
It turned out as a sort of poetic shout of defiance in the face of something that threatens to destroy.
“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
—Dylan Thomas, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night

This was such a powerful piece of writing, and then I read the backstory, and it became even more powerful. I'm proud of you, Florian! Cowardice isn't messing up; it's lying down and refusing to get back on your feet.
Good on ya.
